Sheila’s Laundry has been trading since 2016. Started by my wife (Sheila Stewart) in the front porch of our home at 18 Kyleside Kyleakin on the Isle of Skye. Starting with £20 Iron and 2 customers and a level of quality that brought many more customers.
Soon our front porch shrank as demand increased and in 2018, a small laundry shed was built in the back garden to accommodate the increasing demand. During in this time Sheila’s ( my wife) health begun to decline, so I myself took a more active role in the laundry; helping my wife and learning from her how to iron and a level of professionalism which demanded quality over quantity. Thus with quality, quantity inevitably followed.
Sadly my wife’s health continued to decline, and she died in April 2020. After a period of Lockdown and ongoing grief, Sheila’s laundry started trading again in June 2020. Myself and 18 year old daughter, Naomi picked up our irons and with heavy hearts started working again, we were assisted by my 16 year old son Nathan , my daughters Bethany 14, Leah 11, and Abigail 9. Each of them helping.
It was at this time, that we begun to search for more suitable premises, where we could implement my late wife’s vision for Sheila’s laundry. We looked at a number of buildings, but they were not suitable – or they required major renovation. We eventually became aware that the Highland Council were leasing the former Bright Water Centre in Kyleakin on the Isle of Skye . After three years of negotiations, planning and development, we now offer a comprehensive laundry service for Skye and Lochalsh, Portree and beyond
